Could you be entitled to an Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA)?

• If you are 16 before 30 September 2023 and your family meet the income criteria – you
could be awarded an EMA from the start of the school session if your application is received
by 30 September 2023. Applications received after this date cannot be backdated.


• If you are 16 between 1 October 2023 and 29 February 2024 and your family meet the
income criteria – you could be awarded an EMA from January 2024. You should apply in
December 2023 here - www.dundeecity.gov.uk/education/ema


• The income criteria for session 2023/2024 is based on your parents/carer’s income for
2022/23 and the thresholds are £24,421 per year (one dependent child in house) or £26,884
per year (if there are other dependent children in the house).


• If you are awarded an EMA, you will have to return a signed Learning Agreement before the
payments can start


• Payment of the EMA is based on your weekly attendance which must be 100%
